Weekend happenings: coffee, pancakes, and toddlers

March 27, 2017

Hello to you! How did your weekend go? We got out a bit with the girls on Saturday and Sunday, but spent a lot of time playing around the house. The pollen just dropped here so everything is covered with yellow dust. It’s pretty gross when it’s everywhere so we didn’t spend too much time outside. I can’t wait until it passes.

Here’s a quick recap of our weekend…

Saturday was spent the usual way: coffee (me), smoothies (girls), a workout (me), and errands (again, me). I’ve been enjoying my coffee with steamed almond milk, a small scoop of coconut oil, and cinnamon. So creamy and delicious!

Early morning workout at OTF. I did not participate in the Dri-Tri this time, but if any readers competed in the event I hope you crushed it! The treadmill portion of Saturday’s workout was really challenging, but I’ve been a bit disappointed in the strength work lately.

Matinee with the girls. The girls and I met a friend at the movies to see Beauty and the Beast. I thought it was pretty good, but really long. I’m a firm believer that movies shouldn’t last more than 1.5 hours. This one was well over 2 hours. We were all a bit restless at the end. Parents, I didn’t think the movie was too scary for my kids (they are 3 years old) and there were even younger kids in the audience. The only parts that were a little scary included the wolves.

Of course, there was popcorn and chocolate. #obviously

Sunday morning called for mini gluten-free buttermilk pancakes. Ohmygosh. So delicious!

And more coffee…

Sunday morning I headed out for a run. My legs felt like tree trunks from all the lower body work I’ve been doing lately. It has been out of control. I went easy on this run and stopped a few times to catch my breath and stretch.

Defy Gravity with the girls on Sunday afternoon. They had a ball.

Why, yes, Ashlyn is wearing the same outfit two days in a row. #chooseyourbattles

Outdoor play

We wrapped up our weekend with baked chicken wings, adult beverages, and Netflix.

10 things from the weekend + last week’s workout

My weekend started off on a rough note after I fell down the stairs on Friday. I was busy telling my kids to go slow and watch what they were doing and I ended up tripping and falling down about 10 stairs. I scraped my ankle and bruised my arm, but luckily I’m okay. Geez! What a way to start the weekend. Fortunately, things got better and I thought I’d share a bit about our weekend.

10 things from the weekend

1.  A brisk stroll to the playground. Friday was a teacher workday so I was home solo with the girls. We took our babies to the playground for a little fun.

2.  Coffee-work date Friday afternoon. After playing with the girls for most of the morning, Matt came home and I dashed away to Starbucks to work for a few hours. Even though we have a home office I sometimes work better when I am out of the house.

3.  Teacher work day = early Wine Time. Just FYI, it starts at 4:00 pm on those days.

4.  Waking up on my own Saturday and Sunday morning. Lately Ashlyn has been getting up at 5 am and asking me to make her a smoothie. I think she must hear Matt in the morning as he leaves for work. The last two days I got up on my own and enjoyed some alone time.

5.  Orangetheory class. I just lovvvveee it.

6.  The great outdoors. Even though it was slightly chilly out, the sun was shining and it was beautiful weather. We rode bikes and walked to the playground.

7.  Sunday morning massage. Much needed after my week.

A Fit Mess

8. Lots of downtime, coffee, and slippers. We had zero plans this weekend and it was all I wanted.

A Fit Mess

9. Exploring another playground (that makes three trips this weekend). #parentlife

10. Planning and preparing for next month’s trip to Mexico. This spring trip can’t come soon enough!

Weekend highlights + last week’s workouts + CrossFit

Hello friends! How did the weekend treat you? We are having a mild and warm winter here so we spent a lot of time outside. The girls and I definitely soaked up the sun over the last few days.

Here are a few of our weekend highlights:

Friday evening bike sesh with these cuties. They are good little riders.

A Fit Mess

Friday evening wine and Netflix. I was so stinkin sore from Thursday’s CrossFit workout (see below) that all I could do was lay on the couch and be a bum. We recently started watching ACS: The People vs. OJ Simpson. It’s pretty interesting so far!

Saturday morning workout. I love kicking the weekend off at OTF.

A Fit Mess

Lazy Saturday morning in our PJs. P.S. I finally cut Ashlyn’s bangs. The hair in her face was driving me NUTS!

All the coffee. I like to spend my weekend with a mug in hand at all times. Who’s with me?!

Playground fun with my wild girls. You can just barely see Maddie’s feet sticking out from underneath Ashlyn :).

A Fit Mess

Wine time. Fun fact: I don’t actually know how to choose wine. I went with this one because it was made in Abruzzi, Italy which is where my family is from. It tastes really good!

Sunday morning I met my best friend for a little Target shopping. She’s pregnant and I couldn’t be more excited about having a baby for her. We looked at all the baby items and it brought back so many memories.

I worked a bit in the afternoon and then spent the rest of the day outside. I read for an hour while the girls played outside and then we all went for a walk.

Overall, it was a really great weekend with my kids.

Last week’s workouts

5 mile run (not sure of my pace because my Garmin died half way through)

Orangetheory – Strength / Switch Day

Alternating blocks of 4.5 minutes on strength floor, treadmill, and rower

Run included various pushes at 3% incline for distance, 250 meter row, and then run at 6% incline.

CrossFit (my first official class)

warm up included several rounds of back squats (8 or 9 sets?). I used 65# which felt fairly light, but I was just working on form and getting the movement down.

Metcon (AMRAP)  21-15-9

  • hang cleans (I used 35#)
  • toes to bar (<–so fun!)
  • wall balls (6#)

“Metcon” is just a fancy word for As Many Rounds As Possible (AMRAP). So you would start the workout doing 21 reps of each exercise and then complete 15 reps, and finally 9 of each. It took me 12:16 to finish.

REST – I was sooooo sore from CF

Block 1 (2-3 rounds):

  • 500 m row
  • 10 goblet squats (35#)
  • 10 DB pullovers (25#)
  • 20 swimmers

Block 2 (2-3 rounds):

  • 10 DB chest flys to tricep extensions (15# DBs)
    10 rear delt raises

Block 3:

  • 500 m row
  • 10 hamstring curls
  • 10 sit ups to cross body punch with DBs

Treadmill included hill runs and incline work.

5.65 mile run (8:30 pace)

I’m trying to figure out how to balance running, Orangetheory, and now CrossFit. Given the girls’ school schedule and my work commitments, I think I can manage to do each activity twice a week and have at least one rest day, maybe two. I really don’t want to give anything up so I’m hoping that I can fit everything in.

Here’s how I’m thinking I can structure my weekly activities:

  • Monday – CrossFit
  • Tuesday – Run
  • Wednesday – Orangetheory
  • Thursday – CrossFit
  • Friday – REST
  • Saturday – Orangetheory
  • Sunday – Run

Does anyone have any advice on how to balance these? I am obviously new to CrossFit, but I think I need to start out slow with just two classes per week for now.

Have a great day!

Time flies + weekend happenings + workouts

Hello, friends! How are you? Are you ready for the Super Bowl? That last sentence was totally fake…I’m not into football at all, but I will watch the commercials and eat all the snacks. Duh.

I’m checking in Sunday afternoon with a recap of the last few days. The weather here has been wild. We woke up this morning to sleet and by the afternoon it was 60 degrees. Crazy, huh? I am ready for spring already.

Our week and weekend have been busy, busy. The girls celebrated their last day at their school (tear) on Thursday. We were able to get them started in a new preschool that would transition into pre-K this fall so we jumped on the opportunity to begin a bit earlier. No one is more anxious about the new school than I am. The girls seem fairly excited and also a bit nervous. I am so grateful they have each other during this time. I feel at ease knowing they will be together. Fingers crossed we all adapt to a new routine and schedule.

I swear, these two have grown so fast. I can’t even believe my eyes.

This picture was taken one year ago…

And here they are now…

I’m sorry, but what have you done with my babies?!

The girls and I celebrated at Whole Foods over gluten-free cupcakes. Verdict? Obviously delish!

Friday involved bringing the girls to work with me. I’m home with M & A on Fridays, but I had to deliver some things to the office and pick up a few project items. We weren’t there that long, but the girls got to see where I work (Ashlyn told me it was “boring”– haha) and they had the chance to meet my co-workers. They brought art work for some of my colleagues despite not knowing who they were. So sweet.

Afterwards we went to Foster’s for lunch. I forgot how much I love this place! It’s a very relaxed environment and the girls can spread out and be silly without me feeling like I’m disturbing people. I don’t feel like there are enough of those open seating places where families can relax and just hang out. If you have suggestions, please let me know!

Someone’s happy about her sandwich! 🙂

Saturday I got together with a friend in the morning and then Matt and I took the girls to Defy Gravity. Love it – what a great concept. Exercise for the kids and parents are basically guaranteed their littles will take a nap later. Win-win! The one thing I wish they had here is a cafe or snack bar. My kids seem to get famished instantly.

Lost in the foam pit. I am fairly certain Ashlyn will be on American Ninja Warrior someday.

Later on I ran a few errands and then picked up sushi from one of our favorite local spots. Neither one of us felt like making dinner. However, I rallied later and baked two batches of almond butter blondies. Have you made these yet? I’m sure I’ve shared this recipe before, but it’s seriously the best. Julie knows how to bake.

After the girls went to bed we watched Aziz Ansari on Netflix (omg, this guy is hilarious!). Honestly, after a day filled with toddlers there is nothing better than laughing while nestled up on the couch.

Sunday sleet meant a lazy morning with gluten-free french toast, warm berry compote, scrambled eggs, and copious amounts of coffee.

Bathrobes = the best, right? Girl after my own heart.

Later that day we visited a family friend (also the girls’ nanny) and then I went for a run in the beautiful sunshine. I’m managed to cover 20 miles this week and couldn’t be happier about it. Funny side note: during my run I got nailed in the chest with a tennis ball that someone threw to their dog. It was actually quite hilarious and the woman who hit me felt bad, but I couldn’t stop laughing thinking about how funny that must have looked. I’m proud to say that while I did slow down, I didn’t stop running when that happened. 😉

Last week’s workouts:

Monday – @ home workout

5 rounds:

  • chin ups (reps: 5, 4, 4, 4, 3)
  • push ups (reps: 15, 20, 15, 15, 15)

4 rounds:

  • lateral band walks (25 each side)
  • spiderman planks (40 total)

4 rounds:

  • band overhead presses (20 reps)
  • band high pulls (20 reps)

Rest – 30 minutes of yoga and stretching

6 mile run (7:50 pace->speedy!)

6 mile run (7:58 pace)

Orangetheory – Strength Day

Treadmill work included various pushes on alternating inclines. Floor work included a lot of deadlifts, squats, and step ups (seriously, my favorite movements all in one workout!)

I covered about 3 miles on the treadmill.

5 miles (7:58 pace)

Okay, your turn. How was your weekend? Tell me a highlight!

Ever get hit with something while running?
